Clear Wi-Max

I've been a subscriber to Clear Wi-Max for about 16 months.  There are some good points and some bad about the service.  I have two-to-go bundle, home modem and USB mobile device with unlimited data.  Unlimited is not really unlimited, as there are defintely some periods of time slower than others.  I've also heard that caps have been introduced to throttle bandwidth.  I don't know about that, but I'm sure not able to watch Netflix on most evenings and I'm becoming so frustrated that I am ready to discontinue their service.  I will be writing more about this as I try to find a way to keep Clear and improve my service so my wife and I can watch movies and TV episodes that we want to watch.  I'll contine about that later.

I started using a blog for the first time because of research I've been doing trying to improve my Clear connection.  This evening I found a wonderful blog post called Gadgets and Hacks:  Clear WiMax Followup @ http://broo2.blogspot.com/2009/07/clear-wimax-follow-up.html.  I found this while trying to find an external antenna solution for Wi-Max.  We live in a mobile home in a park (we bought here to be near my 89-year-old mother who lives here and who is slowing down).  Well, you can imagine how well a metal shrouded mobile home works with an indoor Wi-Max modem.  Thus the need to try an outdoor antenna above the rooftops.

Our first Wi-Max tower was 1.5 miles away and everything seemed just fine.  Now we have two towers closer.  The closest is only 2/10 of a mile away.  Should be a great signal, huh.  Well it is at times.  Tonight I did a test with the modem being held up high outside our home at midnight, and Speedtest.net showed a 10 Mbps+ download speed.  Cool.  Earlier in the evening it was only 0.6 Mbps when we we trying to watch the evening news.  Anyway, this thread will follow my exploits trying to improve our signal and our speed.  Our upload speed is only around 0.3 Mbps consistently, which I think should be considerably higher and I will pursue that with Clear Tech support in the coming days and report my progress here also.

That's all for now!
